Steve Brown became a professional composer/MD/musician/writer/performer in 1982 on the West End show NEWSREVUE at the Duchess Theatre. After joining the writer/comedian co-operative Writers Inc, which won the Edinburgh Festival Perrier Award that year, he began to work extensively as a writer/composer in the fields of comedy and Light Entertainment throughout the ‘80s, cutting his teeth on such diverse shows as PLAYSCHOOL, PLAYAWAY, RADIOACTIVE and CARROT’S LIB during which time he co-starred in 3 series of the Sony award winning R4 hit, IN ONE EAR. His first full musical ELMER GANTRY was staged both at Chichester and The Gate Theatre, London in 85/86. He finished the 80’s as a regular contributor on Capital Radio’s award winning BRUNCH show over 2 years and completed 2 UK tours with RORY BREMNER as well as making several guest appearances on his BBC TV series.
Having long been a lyricist and sketch writer for the show, Steve took over as MD/composer on the iconic satirical series SPITTING IMAGE in 1992. Presiding over the last 5 series he sang many key vocal impersonations. He was subsequently chosen by Steve Coogan to play the part of bandleader Glen Ponder on the legendary KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU (WITH ALAN PARTRIDGE). Steve later composed and arranged songs for Coogan’s TONY FERRINO character both on record and television. He led the band on a full scale UK tour of Coogan’s record-breaking show THE MAN WHO THINKS HE IS IT including 10 weeks at The Lyceum theatre. He simultaneously led the house band for Lenny Henry on BBCs LENNY GOES TO TOWN accompanying various guests including Robbie Williams. Steve completed the year as MD/composer for ANT AND DEC’’S groundbreaking Saturday morning children’s series SM:TV, writing the classic WONKEY DONKEY in the process.
Meanwhile, Steve’s 2nd musical SPEND SPEND SPEND opened to critical acclaim at The West Yorkshire Playhouse, transferring to the West End’s Piccadilly Theatre where it won the Evening Standard and Critics Circle Best Musical Award, culminating in a successful 3 month UK tour. At the same time he led his own band for ITVs BRIAN CONLEY SHOW appearing in 3 series and an AUDIENCE WITH. He embarked on the first of several UK tours with HARRY HILL as MD becoming a permanent fixture in Harry’s team, leading THE HARRYS on ITVs ALL NEW HARRY HILL SHOW and providing all the songs, music and jingles for the huge hit TV BURP. Steve recently produced Harry’s debut CD FUNNY TIMES.
After composing the underscore for series 3 of BBC 1 hit NEW TRICKS Steve reunited with Steve Coogan for his 2008 stage comeback tour, writing and arranging all the songs as well as leading the band on a 60 date sell out UK tour. While continuing to write themes, scores and songs for numerous TV and radio shows including SATURDAY NIGHT TAKEAWAY and NOT GOING OUT, he happened to spot RUMER singing at The Cobden Club open mike evening. They began to work together with Steve financing and producing her album SEASONS OF MY SOUL. She signed with ATLANTIC records in March 2010. The album received rave reviews and has since gone double platinum. He subsequently discovered Brit nominated and BBC Sound of 2013 artist LAURA MVULA and produced her debut album SING TO THE MOON for RCA records. He continues to work with and develop various new artists
Steve’s musical version of IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE was staged at The New Wolsey Theatre in 2009 to fantastic reviews and full standing ovations at every performance.. BabyCow have also commissioned Steve to write a pilot for a series for Sky Atlantic.
He has co-written a new musical with Harry Hill entitled I CAN”T SING (THE X-FACTOR MUSICAL) which opened at THE LONDON PALLADIUM in February 2014 being co-produced by Stage Entertainment and SIMON COWELL’S company SYCO.
